EPA Section 608 Universal Technician Certification

Since November 14, 1994, EPA-Approved Section 608 certification is needed to service building air conditioning and refrigeration systems. With 608 Universal certification, you can purchase any refrigerant in containers greater than 20 pounds. Only CERTIFIED TECHNICIANS can purchase or recover refrigerants. The required EPA 608 technician certification does not expire and covers replacement refrigerants. Some distributors require additional training on blended refrigerants before selling 410A. Per the EPA guidelines, technicians attending the Licensed Trades Association’s “Lightening Bolt” training seminars that successfully pass the EPA Section 608 certification exam and receive a Universal Certification Card are certified to recover refrigerant during the maintenance, service or repair of small appliances, high-pressure equipment and low-pressure equipment. That is, they are certified to work on any type of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment except motor vehicle air conditioning. The Universal certification exam consists of a total of 100 multiple choice questions, 25 Core questions, 25 Type I questions, 25 Type II questions, and 25 Type III questions. A passing score of 70% on the entire exam will be required for universal certification. Utilizing the Lightening Bolt method for teaching, Licensed Trades ensures that each technician will pass the test prior to leaving the class. Upon successful completion of the class and test, the technician will leave with their test results and their Identification card. Currently, the certification has no expiration date. However, if EPA regulations change after a technician becomes certified, it is the technician's responsibility to comply with any future changes in the law. LTA is approved by the EPA as a certifying agency for Section 608 Type I, II, III and Universal exams.
